A new law in Alberta is opening the door to U.S.-style health care in Canada.This law has the potential to spread across the country, destroying public health care as we know it.Alberta's UCP government, led by Danielle Smith, passed the Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2025 (No. 2), also known as Bill 11. It allows doctors to work in both the public and private health care systems at the same time. Danielle Smith says that private health care will take pressure off the public system. It doesn't work that way.This law will not fix our public health care system. It will make it worse.Bill 11 does not create more doctors, nurses, or appointments. It lets existing health care workers divide their time between public patients and patients who can afford to pay privately. Every hour spent treating a paying patient is an hour not spent reducing the public wait list. Private health care doesn't create new capacity. It creates a faster lane for rich people who can afford to pay.The result is two classes of health care: rich patients who can pay get seen faster, and everyone else who are left waiting longer than before.At a time when Canadians are already struggling with the cost of everyday life, Bill 11 moves us toward a U.S.-style system where health care becomes another expense.
